President Barack Obama says programs to help struggling homeowners have not worked as he had hoped, so he's calling on Congress to do more. He is detailing a proposal to make it easier for homeowners to refinance their mortgages at lower interest rate.

After a big win in Florida, Republican presidential front-runner Mitt Romney says he is toughening up for contest to come. And it's still a long road ahead to reach the critical number of delegates he need to secure the GOP nomination in August, of next, Nevada in May.

Syrian troops are battling army defectors in a string of towns just outside Damascus. The battles are part of last week defensive that fuel some of the bloodiest days of the nearly 11-month-old uprising.

And in Washington DC buds are starting to come out on the districts famed cheery blossoms. Near-record temperatures here and across a swath of the country have winter feeling so far, well, more than threat.
