Welcome back to Culture Express. Now the red eye logo and the name Weibo might not be as familiar to Western audiences as Facebook or Twitter. But this vast social network is attracting the attention of some Western celebrities. Sina Weibo already has tens of millions of Chinese Internet users regularly logging on to chat with their friends, post pictures, comment on the latest news stories or see what their favorite celebrities have been doing. China has the largest Internet population in the world - by the end of last year over 470 million according to Beijing's Telecommunications Administration Bureau. A significant percentage of these web users spend time on one of China's microblogging websites. So it's little wonder film stars like Tom Cruise and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and bands like Radiohead, are securing a presence on China's largest Weibo service, Sina. But Sina Weibo is not the only player in town. Tencent launched its Weibo service in April 2010 - eight months after Sina. China's most followed celebrity is actress Yao Chen, who has accrued more than 9.5 million followers in 24 months. And compare that to Lady Gaga who gained some 11 million fans on Twitter in 40 months. Sina has recently announced plans to launch an English-language Weibo version in the future.
