                    • 潮人潮事:不可思議的影子藝術【上海學生英文報】

神乎其技!垃圾投影成藝術品。 [en]Incredible Shadow Art[/en][cn]不可思議的影子藝術[/cn] It appears that more and more great artists are [w=experiment]experimenting[/w] with shadow painting these days. British-born and based artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster are just two of them. They used piles of everyday [w]junk[/w] and bits of [w]twisted[/w] metal and skillfully arranged them to create incredibly realistic shadows. Projecting light against the carefully constructed 3D rubbish [w=heap]heaps[/w], they transformed them into something entirely different. In one work, they spent six months using trash, two stuffed [w=seagull]seagulls[/w] and a light projector to create a [w]self-portrait[/w] of the pair smoking and drinking. They also once used trash and personal items, wood, light projector and light [w]sensor[/w] to create the [w=silhouette]silhouettes[/w] of the artists’ heads in incredible detail. The art of projection is a type of [w]transformative[/w] art. The process of transformation, from [w=discard]discarded[/w] waste, scrap metal or even [w]taxidermy[/w] creatures to a recognizable image, echoes the idea of “[w]perceptual[/w] psychology.” Noble and Webster are familiar with this process and how people evaluate abstract forms. Throughout their careers they have played with the idea of how humans perceive abstract images and define them with meaning. The result is surprising and powerful as it redefines how abstract forms can transform into [w]figurative[/w] ones. Noble and Webster both attended fine art courses in their respective universities. The two first met in 1986 as Fine Art students at Nottingham Trent University and became good friends through shared interests. In their fourteen-year career, Noble and Webster have mixed the strategies of modern [w]sculpture[/w] and the attitude of [w]punk[/w] to make art from [w]anti-art[/w]. The pair’s works can be divided into the “Light Works” and “Shadow Works.” Ms Webster said, “We kept them both going side by side. There are two sides to the work: the shiny side and the dark side. That kind of reflects the two personalities within us.”?

[en]A Meaningful Connection?[/en][cn]漢服與傳統(tǒng)文化的關系[/cn] Given the rapid pace at which China is changing, it is not surprising that people want to hang on to pieces of the past. A [w]glimpse[/w] back in time is like [w=peer]peering[/w] into another world. Many of the traditions, [w=ceremony]ceremonies[/w], and values have been lost over time. In an attempt to reconnect with that which has been lost, some people have pulled forward [w=symbol]symbols[/w] of the past—traditional clothing, or Hanfu. Hanfu refers to the clothing worn by the Han people for thousands of years before the [w]establishment[/w] of the Qing Dynasty in 1644. Some Chinese people are trying to [w]revive[/w] the traditional clothing. The [w=garment]garments[/w] include long robes with wide sleeves, skirts, and hats. Without a doubt, the garments are beautiful, but hardly convenient for a modern lifestyle. While it’s unlikely that you’ll see [w=folk]folks[/w] walking through the streets wearing Hanfu on their way to work or school, it’s not uncommon to see the traditional clothing during special occasions. A bride and groom will often pose for pictures in traditional [w]attire[/w] on their wedding day; students may wear Hanfu during their graduation ceremony; historical clothing is often displayed in shows during traditional festivals. Some think that wearing Hanfu on special occasions is a great way to stay in touch with traditions of the past. Others feel that it is a [w]superficial[/w] display of Chinese culture and the people involved lack true understanding of its importance. This is proven when mistakes are made in the way people wear the clothing. For example, last year, a group of elementary school students wore ancient costumes including a hat (which they made from a [w]disposable[/w] cup and chopsticks). However, historically, only men bound their hair and wore a cap during the [w]maturation[/w] ceremony at age 20. Understanding one’s cultural [w]heritage[/w] isn’t as simple as recognizing traditional [w=outfit]outfits[/w], but includes understanding its significance. To truly appreciate that, one must take the time to understand the literature, ceremonies, customs, and values of the past.?
