【短語來源】In parade-ground terminology a rank is a line of troops standing shoulder to shoulder and a file is one in which they stand one behind the other. The rank and file are therefore the whole body of ordinary troops in a formation. Officers on parade stand outside it.

在閱兵場，rank是指并排而立的一行，file是指前后成隊(duì)的一列，所以the rank and file就是指方陣列隊(duì)的整體。
