the last thing we want，這里是偏正短語，定語后置。

這句話我們可以把它拆分成兩句。A fire is the last thing. ?We want the thing.

合并兩個句子，并把相同的部分放在一起。A fire is the last thing ( the thing) we want.

再用關(guān)系代詞that/ which 替代the thing形成定語從句：A fire is the last thing which we want.

其中thing 是被修飾目標，又叫先行詞。

that/ which和前面的thing形成了關(guān)系，是關(guān)系代詞，又叫引導詞。它在從句中作賓語，所以還可以省略，就變成了：A fire is the last thing we want.

last thing 最后的東西。這里有中西方文化的差異，不是壓箱底的，而是表示最不想要的，所以排到名單的最后。如果有人對你說，You are the last man I want to see. 不是代表你對他重要，而是他最恨你，永遠不想見到你了。

hard line，指強硬的手段和態(tài)度。The school should adopt a hard line on puppy love.
