able, capable, competent

這些形容詞均含有“有能力的,能干的”之意

1) able :最常用詞,多用于褒義,著重指多方面的,經(jīng)常性的,或潛在性的能力。有時也指高超、非凡的能力。

eg: 1. Most children are able to walk before they are able to talk.(多數(shù)孩子在會說話前就會走路。)

????? 2. The patient was soon able to sit up.(病人很快就能坐起來了。)

2)capable :語氣弱于able,指有能力、有潛力或有條件做某事,常與of連用。

eg: 1.He is a manager capable of leadership.(他是個富有領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能的經(jīng)理。)

????? 2.Jim is capable at sports.(吉姆擅長運(yùn)動。)

3)competent :強(qiáng)調(diào)具有能勝任某項工作的足夠技能或其它所需的條件。

eg: 1. He did a competent job.(他的工作做得相當(dāng)出色。)

abolish, cancel, repeal

這些動詞均含“取消、廢除”之意

1)abolish :正式用詞,指徹底廢除某種制度、規(guī)章或習(xí)俗。

eg: 1.The Americans abolished slavery in 1863.(美國于1863年廢除奴隸制度。)

????? 2.Do abolish this kind of bad evil.(一定要廢除這種惡劣習(xí)俗。)

2)cancel?:用法廣泛,多指取消債務(wù)、合同、證書、比賽、旅行、計劃或約會等。

eg: 1. He cancelled his order for the goods.(他取消了貨物訂單。)

???? 2. We were all disappointed to learn that the picnic had been cancelled.(我們得知這次野餐已經(jīng)取消, 都感到很失望。)

3)repeal:書面用詞,指撤銷立法機(jī)關(guān)通過的協(xié)議、法案或法律等。

eg: The Labour Party repealed the Act.(工黨廢除了那項法令。)
